As salaamu alaykum.
Should the head and face of the deceased be uncovered after they are lowered into the grave?
Recently, there has been a bit of a discussion in our community about this issue. People (non-scholars) have advanced the following views as being "correct" according to their understanding:
1) That the kafan should NOT be opened so that the head or face is uncovered.
2) That only the left cheek should be uncovered.
3) That the entire face should be uncovered after the dead person is propped up so that they face the qiblah.
Furthermore, those in the latter two camps claim that this is a Sunnah.
Can anyone clarify what the proper, masnoon method is insha'allah? Furthermore, some clarification on the status of uncovering or covering the face in terms of it being a Sunnah or not, would also be quite helpful.
Jazakallau Khair.
Wa'salaam.
