As-salamu alaykum.
As a child, I was a told the story below to explain why fish are halal.
One day, the Pharaoh at the time of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) said that he would, naudhubillah, kill Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted). The Pharaoh then somehow tied birds to something that he was he was sitting on in order to be carried up into the skies with an arrow to, naudhubillah, kill Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted). At this point, the Pharaoh looked up and said, "O, Allah, please do not humiliate me," and so when he loaded up his arrow to shoot, Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) asked the animals,
"Which one of you is willing to give his blood for Me?"
A fish volunteered itself and jumped in the way of the arrow and so when the Pharaoh came back down, there was blood on the arrow. As a reward for its sacrifice, Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) purified the fish.
It appears that there are far, far too many problems with this story from an Islamic standpoint to even begin pointing out, but this story is frequently passed around in my community as the explanation of why fish are halal. I have never found any authentic source for this story, so I would appreciate the input of the members of this forum.
JazakAllahu Khayran for all of your help.
