Salam brothers,
I am wondering if there's anyone in the Hartford area that someone knows of whom I could gain Deeni 'ilm from. I was originally intending to attend a madrasah in South Africa, like Madrasah In'aamiyyah or Darul Uloom Azaadville. However, I don't have permission to go until I finish college here in CT (starting this fall in shaa' Allaah). That's why my intention is to study under a scholar during the time I'll be in college. I am willing to travel; I know that there are many 'Ulama around NYC, which is about two hours from me. It would be better if there are Ulama closer to me, but if I have to travel it's not really a problem. I'm interested in at least starting with Arabic, moving on to other subjects of the Dars-e-Nizami syllabus in shaa' Allaah. By the way, my preference is that the scholar is associated with 'Ulama-e-Deoband.
Other brothers can also please give advice if they have experience with this type of situation. How much did you learn over the four or five years? Was it worth it? I also remember reading in a thread by Mufti Husain sahib that even if you learn Arabic, you still shouldn't skip the first or second year at the madrasah. So, would it be a waste of time to learn a little bit under a scholar if I will still repeat the experience later on?
There is a big need of 'Ulama in this area.. there are many masaajid here, but almost none have proper imams. Of the only two I can think of within half an hour, one is Salafi (IslamQA type) and the other Azhari. There's not a problem with Azharis, but they have a different sort of mindset if you know what I mean.
Jazaak Allahu khayran, wasalam
