The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) has said: These hearts rust just as iron rusts; and indeed they are polished through the recitation of the Quran. (Irshadul Qulub; Page 78)
Every year old Muslim visited his daughters family in small village of eastern Ohio. MashaAllah, his daughter had given him beautiful twins-grandsons. Each early morning Grandpa was sitting in the drawing room and reading Quran. Twins were very curious and loved their Grandpa so much that they were with him everywhere and tried to do everything like him. One morning when Grandpa was reading Quran as usual he noticed an expression of concern upon their faces. When hed finished the reading and performed Fajar Twins asked him thoughtfully, Grandpa! We try to read the Quran like you but we don't understand anything. What good does reading the Quran do?
Grandpa thought for a minute then he silently went to a storeroom and came back holding in his hands holed muddy old bucket. Twins were really amazed. Grandpa said, Take this bucket to the river and bring me back a bucket of water. Twins tried to ask him wherefore he needed a bucket of water from river. But Grandpa said, First you bring me a bucket of water then I asked all your questions. Twins did as he was told but all the water leaked out before they returned home. Grandpa smiled and said, You should move faster next time," and sent them back to the river with the bucket to try again.
This time Twins ran faster, but again the bucket was empty before they got back to the house. Breathless Twins said that it was impossible to carry water in this bucket because of holes, and they asked if they could take other bucket instead. Grandpa told them that he didnt want any bucket of water he wanted this bucket of water. He supposed them to run faster and he went out the door to watch the boys attempt.
This time Twins knew it was impossible, but they wanted to show their grandfather that even if they ran as fast as they could, the water would leak out before they returned home. The boys again filled the bucket with water, tried to close the holes with fingers and ran hard, but when they reached home the bucket was again empty. Out of breath, they said, "See Grandpa, it's useless!"
Grandpa smiled and said, So you think it is useless? Then look at the bucket."
Twins stare with astonishment at the bucket and for the first time realized that the bucket had changed. It had been turned from a dirty old bucket into clean shining bucket, inside and out. Grandpa said, That's what happens when you read the Quran. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. That is the work of Allah in our lives.
