Images, Icons, and Idolatry in Islam

I'm studying Iconoclasm (the destruction of images) and have stumbled on a period of history where the Christian Church was influenced by the Islamic view against using images in churches, or as a part of worship. I'm looking for more information on Islam's view of art, such as:

What are the roots and reasons behind the prohibition of images of the Prophet Muhammad? Are visual arts (specifically the representative kind, of people and nature) discouraged in Islamic culture, and/or in mosques? What are current attitudes towards religious imagery?

I have seen some incredibly gorgeous renditions of the Quran, and Arabic calligraphy— is the intensity of this design work a reaction (consciously or not) to orthodox attitudes towards representative art?

If anyone is knowledgeable in Islamic arts or can point me to some good resources/articles, I would be very grateful.

Peace!
